TMJ Dysfunction

Are you suffering from jaw pain? TMJ dysfunction could be the source.

Do you struggle to open your mouth when eating or yawning? Do you hear a popping sound when you open or close your mouth? You may have a TMJ disorder and will benefit from physical therapy to resolve your dysfunction.

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is also known as your jaw. It is the connection between your jawbone to your skull. Just like the other joints in your body, injury or dysfunction can lead to pain and disability.

TMJ dysfunction is characterized by pain and difficulty with movement. For some, the joint doesn’t allow the normal opening of the mouth; for others, the joint can get stuck, and all movements become painful. It is also common for the muscles surrounding the joint to become stiff and sore. In severe cases, a dysfunctional TMJ joint can cause headaches or tension in the neck.

The good news is that physical therapy can help you get rid of your jaw pain! Click here to make an appointment with our skilled physical therapist at Elder Athlete Physical Therapy in St. Petersburg, FL today.

What are the symptoms of TMJ dysfunction?

A dentist or doctor usually diagnoses TMJ dysfunction, but often treatment to resolve this condition is performed by a physical therapist. Our physical therapist is highly skilled at treating TMJ disorders and can help identify the cause of your pain.

I will conduct a thorough examination that includes a detailed medical history and physical examination. I will address the joint and surrounding muscles to ensure you restore your joint’s proper alignment and functioning.

TMJ pain is commonly caused by teeth grinding or clenching (i.e., bruxism), dislocation of the disc between the ball and socket joint, arthritis, stress, or some type of trauma.

The most common symptoms of a TMJ disorder include:

  • Pain or tenderness of your jaw
  • Pain in one or both of the temporomandibular joints
  • Pain in and around your ear (i.e., earaches)
  • Difficulty chewing or pain while chewing
  • Facial pain
  • Locking of the joint, making it difficult to open or close your mouth
  • Headaches in the temples

If you have any of the symptoms listed, don’t hesitate to get in touch with our St. Petersburg, FL physical therapy clinic for lasting pain relief!
